Candle Magic: A Guide to Boosting your Mood
September 25, 2024 – Jenne Wicht
Ever wonder why candles have such a profound effect on our mood?
It's more than just the soft glow and cozy ambiance. Science reveals the magical power of scents to evoke emotions and memories. Our olfactory system, or sense of smell, is directly connected to the parts of our brain that process emotions and memories. This explains why certain scents can transport us back in time or instantly lift our spirits.
Given the impact of the scent, it's important to choose your candles carefully.
Not every scent is going to have the same impression on every person. Just as we see color in a variety of ways, our brains interpret scents differently. One person's love for patchouli may be a total turnoff to someone else. Beyond personal preference, scents also have an impact on the brain. Lavender and Chamomile, for example, can be calming while Citrus can be stimulating. So consider the mood you are trying to create as much as your attraction to the scent profile when shopping for candles.
Not all Candles are Made Equal. Some Ingredients Should be Avoided.
Lurking beneath the delightful smell of a glowy candle can be tons of toxins. It's important to read the ingredients and be sure to invest in your candle wisely. Things to avoid include lead wicks, synthetic fragrances and parraffins. These are all commonly found in candles and will release VOC's and chemicals into the air. These can be harmful to your health, especially if you have allergies or respiratory issues. When selecting candles, opt for those made with natural ingredients like Beeswax or Soy Wax and make sure your candle is made with Essential Oils. Wicks should be made of Cotton or FSC Wood. When in doubt, stick to Natural Ingredients that come from the Earth.
As if the Scent Profile wasn't enough, it turns out the flickering light of candle also carries it's own health benefits.
The soft, flickering light of a candle can create a calming atmosphere, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Candlelight can signal to your body that it's time to wind down, making it easier to fall asleep. The warm, inviting glow of a candle can create a more positive and uplifting mood. The combination of light, scent, and sound from a burning candle can stimulate your senses, promoting relaxation and mindfulness. Studies have even shown that burning a candle during study sessions can improve test results. So when you're ready to wind down at night, try putting that phone down and light a candle instead.
